Access. Improvement. Measures. (AIM)

Alberta AIM (Access, Improvement, Measures) is a program that helps clinics in primary care networks improve patient care and redesign office practices to improve efficiency.

The AIM program has six learning sessions. Each learning session is a two-day meeting in which the participating teams learn how to implement changes. It provides the teams with the knowledge, skills, and materials to create improved processes in a specific topic area. Some examples of topic areas are:  access to appointments, effective teamwork, and care for those with chronic diseases.

The time in between learning sessions is referred to as an “action period”.  During this time the teams submit reports to teaching staff. The reports detail clinic progress on the goals the clinic team has identified and created. The clinic teams receive support through email and phone with teaching staff and other members of their learning group throughout the “action period”.

This way of learning is referred to as a “collaborative”.  It is an approach to continuous improvement that has been successful internationally as well as in Alberta.
