Recruitment of Physicians to PCNs

Often during the business planning process, additional physicians express an interest and/or commitment to becoming a participating physician in the PCN. Project planners are asked to keep the PCI Program Office aware of any growth in the number of physicians when submitting the required business planning documents.

On rare occasions, a request may come forward to include physicians from another nearby region. Project planners need to ensure that the following new policy statements approved by the PCIC are adhered to when engaging in discussions for possible inclusion of physicians from a nearby region:
  • PCN planners and AHS staff are expected to recognize AHS as one of the members of the tripartite agreement. As such, there is an expectation to work in a respectful and collaborative manner, acknowledging the authority of AHS.
  • PCN planners and stakeholders shall not approach physicians from another region to join their PCN.
  • If a physician wishes to join a PCN outside of the region in which his/her practice is located, the physician shall first contact AHS representatives where his/her practice is located to discuss the rationale and determine whether or not AHS would be supportive to the physician pursuing interests to join an outside PCN.
  • The AHS representative must consent in writing to the physician pursuing opportunities to join a PCN outside of the region. Additionally, if AHS does not consent to the physician joining a PCN outside the region, AHS has an obligation to work collaboratively to determine capacity options for the physician to become part of a PCN within the region.
  • AHW staff cannot register physicians with a PCN outside AHS boundary without receiving confirmation from PCI Program Office staff that there is written agreement for such an arrangement by AHS representatives in both AHS' involved.
