Evaluation

The Primary Care Initiative Committee (PCIC) is mandated to deal with all aspects of the Primary Care Initiative. This includes approval of expenditures and all other matters relating to Primary Care Networks (PCNs), including the review of programs and services and to develop and oversee all evaluation activities.

As part of this effort, a province-wide evaluation is currently underway. The evaluation will provide information on the impact of PCNs in:

  • Helping to increase primary care (the first level of care most people receive when needing health care) capacity in Alberta
  • Helping to set future direction for primary care
  • Helping to build a sustainable health care system, and
  • Demonstrating value for the resources that have been invested in the Primary Care Initiative

The evaluation began in June 2009 and is continuing in the current year with a final report due in late 2010. The evaluation will involve two critical phases:

  • Formative – this initial phase involves surveying, visiting and speaking with physicians and other PCN staff to hear how the process of establishing a PCN works and how it can be enhanced for future development.
  • Summative – this phase looks at the outcomes and impacts of Primary Care Networks on patients, health professionals and other key stakeholders.
