Operating a PCN

Child and doctor check-up

Once a Primary Care Network (PCN) has completed the business planning process and becomes operational, it must meet ongoing reporting and planning requirements. PCNs are required to submit mid-year reports, annual reports and an annual budget. PCNs must also submit for PCIC approval a new three-year business plan prior to the expiry of the existing three-year approved plan.

When a PCN makes changes to its structure or the services it provides, the PCN must ensure that their Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) is kept current. PCNs also need to ensure all physicians/clinics that join the network after it is operational are covered by PIAs. The PCN must also inform the PCI Program Management Office and Alberta Health (formerly Alberta Health and Wellness), by completing the appropriate forms.

Examples of changes include:

  • Changes to PCN program information
  • Changes physician group information
  • Changes to other health provider information
  • Changes to service delivery locations
  • Changes to organization and business arrangements
